In terms of clear-cut chances the hosts would most definitely have been the most disappointed they couldn't cash in.
Charlton went closest but were grateful to two key defensive contributions by Radostin Kishishev and Thomas Myhre that preserved their point in the closing stages.
Winger Dennis Rommedahl started on the right, as left winger Jerome Thomas dropped to the bench.
The draw combined with a share of the spoils in Everton's game, while Newcastle picked up three points meant the Addicks remain in 11th but the gap down to 12th was reduced to just a point after Manchester City were leapfrogged.
Alan Curbishley: "I thought the first 60 minutes was quite even and both teams were really struggling to fashion out a really good chance.
"Then the changes West Ham made livened it up a bit. The last 15 minutes were theirs and we had to defend. It was all set up to be Teddy Sheringham's day and he nearly did it didn't he.
"We got some great blocks in and Radostin Kishishev's challenge at the end was a point saving tackle. If we defended like we did today at Christmas perhaps our season wouldn't have taken the dip it did.
"We didn't come here destined to try and get a draw, we came here to try and win the game. At one stage I was considering playing with both wingers to give it a go but I had to change it when West Ham got on top."
"I thought Luke Young was excellent today, just like he has been all through the season."
Curbs on Young injury: "It's a similar injury to the one he picked up at Blackburn Rovers a few years ago. He's gone to turn out for the ball and his left foot's given way and his turned his ankle over. He was out for around 5-6 weeks last time."
Alan Pardew (WHUFC): "It was a hard technical chance for Teddy (Sheringham) but he jinked his body and still managed to force a fantastic save from Thomas Myrhe."
"I've made my point to the referee that he hadn't encouraged Charlton Athletic to get going today. In the second half he could have tried to get some tempo into the match, yet he never made one gesture towards achieving that."
