Charlton travelled to the Priestfield Stadium on a damp and windy October afternoon looking to gain an eighth victory of the season against Kent side Gillingham.
The Addicks named one change to the starting eleven that took to the field at The Valley against Huddersfield Town with Jose Semedo replacing Matt Spring in midfield.
Gills manager Mark Stimson spoke before the game of how much his side were looking forward to the visit of the Londoners and by many accounts were the side more likely to score in a tightly contested game.
Rob Elliot proved to be the star player for the Addicks throughout as he was called upon time and again to stop dangerous attempts from all angles of the Gillingham attack.
Sadly for Charlton, although their defence was strong, they could not find a way through in attack, having to watch in despair as several chances were sliced and scooped away from the target.
The game seemed to be heading for a 0 - 0 draw until the 79th minute when Jose Semedo played the ball into the box looking for Sam Sodje, only for John Nutter to win the header and unluckily loop the ball over Simon Royce to put the Addicks in the lead with an own goal.
Charlton’s lead lasted all of 90 seconds however as Gillingham broke and Simeon Jackson was able to drill a shot into the bottom corner of the net to tie the game up.
The game ended 1 – 1 with Charlton bemoaning their luck in attack and praising their luck in defence on a day when Leeds United lost 2 -1 to Millwall at the New Den.
The Addicks remain in second place with 29 points, only one point away from 1st place but only one point above 3rd placed Colchester United who beat Walsall in their match today.
Charlton go into tomorrow’s 1pm FA cup draw with ball number 12 hoping that they can bounce back from today’s performance in their next fixture away to Carlisle on Saturday 24th.
Come on you Addicks!
