Charlton Athletic 2 - Brentford FC 0

Charlton's perfect start to League One football continued today with a comfortable 2 - 0 victory over London rivals Brentford.

The Bees, who arrived at The Valley unbeaten this season and looking to cause an upset came close on a few occasions, but were never really able to emulate the quality that the hosts displayed.

For the sixth game in a row Phil Parkinson named an unchanged starting eleven, with the substitute's bench only containing one of the Addicks deadline day signings in the form of Sam Sodje.

The early kick off, which was also Charlton's first live televised game of the season, began at a slow pace, with neither side looking to gain an immediate advantage.

On eleven minutes however, the first goal was scored, Miguel Llera, pondering on the ball inside the Charlton half released a beautifully struck cross field ball, the ball flew over Brentford left back Sam Wood and Lloyd Sam pounced. Skilfully controlling the ball and bringing it into the area, he looked up and slotted the ball gently into the path of Deon Burton who, calmly controlled the ball and slotted it into the back of the net.

1 - 0 to Charlton.

The game restarted and neither side took control for the best part of 25 minutes, Brentford had several corners, but each one was comfortably defended by the again excellent Charlton back line.

Then on the half hour mark, The Valley faithful were rewarded for their patience with a segment of build up play from Charlton Athletic which truly exampled the beauty of football, the Brentford defence didn't know where to cover or even where to look. The play culminated with Deon Burton back-heeling the ball to Lloyd Sam, who proceeded to dribble in and out of two Brentford defenders on the edge of the area to find himself unmarked just to the right of the penalty spot in a one on one with the keeper, calm and composed, Lloyd Sam placed the ball into the bottom right of the goal for his third goal in two games.

2 - 0 to Charlton.

Throughout the rest of the first half neither side looked like furthering the lead, the main excitement from the remaining 15 minutes came with two x - rated tackles by Cleveland Taylor and Kevin O'Connor on Nicky Bailey and Deon Burton leading to yellow cards.

Half Time: Charlton 2 - 0 Brentford

The second half began and the Addicks nearly made the game 3 - 0 on 48 minutes, Jonjo Shelvey playing a low cross into the box only for Deon Burton to miss hit the ball and saw his shot go comfortably wide.

Brentford tried in vain to get back into the game but to no avail, former Charlton academy player Myles Weston spooning the ball over the bar from six yards out really summed up Brentford's day.

All hope was not lost for the Bees though as Rob Elliot was called upon to make a fantastic save on 72 minutes from Carl Cort's point blank header. Ten minutes later Brentford were awarded a free kick just outside the Addicks penalty area after a foul from Nicky Bailey, David Hunt stepped up and curled the ball beautifully, beating the wall and Rob Elliott in the process, but thankfully for Charlton, he was unable to beat the crossbar.

Izale McLeod came on for Jonjo Shelvey after 82 minutes and almost had an immediate impact, finding himself surrounded by defenders on the by line, McLeod somehow managed to get the ball past the defenders into the area only to have his shot saved brilliantly by Lewis Price in the Brentford goal.

McLeod's efforts in the final ten minutes were almost rewarded however in injury time as Deon Burton played Izale through, McLeod, one on one with the keeper, buried his ball into the bottom of the far corner, only to find that the linesman had flagged for offside.

The full time whistle went and concluded Charlton's sixth league win in a row this season, a maximum 18 points, and a very happy Valley.

Come on you Addicks!
