Lee Tomlin penalty earns Bristol City win in front of new boss Lee JohnsonLee Johnson watched from the stands as his new club Bristol City beat fellow Championship strugglers Charlton 1-0 thanks to a Lee Tomlin penalty at a blustery Valley.On Saturday, Johnson was named as Steve Cotterill's replacement - after the former boss left the Robins last month - and will keep John Pemberton as his head coach after the stand-in boss guided City out of the bottom three in his last game in charge.The away side went ahead from the penalty spot after 20 minutes when Bournemouth loanee Tomlin was pushed in the back by Johann Gudmundsson as he attempted to volley a cross from Mark Little.Tomlin struck his resulting spot-kick straight at goalkeeper Stephen Henderson, who should have done better but failed to keep the ball out which proved enough to claim all three points and move City a spot above their opponents into 22nd.All this was going on amidst a noisy demonstration against the Charlton regime.Addicks fans have been relentless in their protest against the club's Belgian owners and demonstrated their displeasure after 19 minutes and five seconds by holding up scores of banners.The time was chosen to represent the cub being founded in 1905.Charlton manager Jose Riga - in his second spell at the Valley - chose not to use new loan signings Rod Fanni and Yaya Sanogo, but continued Charlton's strong Belgian connection by starting with Jorge Teixeira, on loan from Standard Liege.Henderson redeemed himself after the opener to claw away twice from Luke Freeman who had been teed up by Tomlin.Freedman was also denied when he tried a cheeky 30-yard chip which Henderson tipped over the crossbar.The Addicks showed plenty of attacking intent but never really troubled City keeper Richard O'Donnell, a January transfer window signing from Wigan.Simon Makienok won a number of high balls but could not make them count, with Gudmundsson playing off him without getting a clean break.Icelander Gudmundsson played a neat through ball in for Zakarya Bergdich but the little striker's shot was weak and easy for O'Donnell to gather.Ademola Lookman had a diving header deflected for a corner and substitute Reza Ghoochannejhad was denied by an excellent Nathan Baker tackle.Another Baker tackle on Ghoochannejhad brought a booking, while Gundmundsson hit the resulting 20-yard free-kick low into the wall for another squandered opportunity.City defended in numbers with skipper Korey Smith a solid anchor in front of the back four and right-back Scott Goldbourne causing problems when he pushed on.Robins' penalty claims were rejected when Chris Solly blocked an effort from substitute Aaron Wilbraham, while Freeman hit a free-kick over the bar as City continued to press for a second goalSource : PA
