MY VIEWS: Sunday 22nd August 2004

Charlton 2 Portsmouth 1

First home game of the season and Charlton had to prove something to The Valley faithful after the awful display against Bolton at the Reebok last week.

I was away on holiday this week so only heard the result and didn’t know much else about what happened last week, according to the Charlton fans I spoke to, it was a typical first game of the season for Charlton. At least we started away from home first this year. As for the Portsmouth game I only just made it in time for kick off after landing from my holiday at 1:30pm. Fortunately I only missed the first 5 minutes.

Now allot of people are saying we were lucky after being gifted a goal from Hislop (thanks Shaka) but sometimes we need that luck. Last season we would have probably drawn or even lost that game, but I think we did deserve the win in the end, even though it was a harsh was for Portsmouth to lose. I did feel sorry for Hislop, but then again I was one of the 25,000 people chanting, "There is only one Shaka Hislop".

It was the start we needed at Home, there have been allot of Charlton fans moaning about our home form over the past 2-3 seasons, so it was nice to have a winning start. It was also nice to see our new signings, I enjoyed seeing Rommendahl and Murphy and I think Jeffers will prove to be a good signing even though we only say 10 minutes of him.

Overall a good result, just what we needed after last week even if we were lucky in the end. Lets hope we will be celebrating 2 home wins on Wednesday night.
