And Reed, a former director of youth development with The FA, is not daunted by the fact that he goes into the managers job at Charlton with no experience of managing at club level.

Reed had been assistant boss to Iain Dowie before his sacking on Monday.

"My background is unusual but I'm not new to management," Reed has said.

"I managed a massive department at the FA and have plenty of experience working with international players.

"This job doesn't daunt me but it is a challenge and I'm looking forward to it."
