The 41-year-old was always popular with team-mates and fans as a player but insists he can make the step up to the top job.
He said: "If you have a football career for 24 years you've got to have something in your system that says `I want to play and be number one'.
"You don't always have to outwardly show that but I've realised there are times as a coach that you have to show it and be a strong and forceful manager. But you have to pick and choose your moments."
