The visitors held on though and took the sixth round FA Cup tie to a replay at the Riverside, which will have to be put on the back-burner as Boro's immediate priority turns back to Europe.
Steve McClaren said: "Charlton missed some very good chances, and we could have been a goal down or maybe two by half-time."
For Charlton, a place in the final still remains a distinct possibility, and if the Addicks or Boro get drawn this afternoon to play West Ham United in the last four there will be all to play for when the two sides meet again on Teeside.
