A club statement said: "Our position remains as it has always been. We wish Alan Curbishley to remain as the manager of Charlton Athletic but the role of England manager is the top football coaching job in this country and if it is a role that Alan is offered and wishes to accept, we will not stand in his way.
"We have unequivocally respected the Football Association's specific request not to disclose that permission that been sought or given and we are disappointed that the Football Association issued a statement last night without making contact with any official of our club."
Curbishley said: "Last Friday I attended an informal, and I stress the word informal, meeting with Brian Barwick (Football Association chief executive). The meeting was arranged at the request of the FA to discuss the vacancy for the job of England manager. I attended the meeting with the full knowledge and approval of my chairman, Richard Murray. I am disappointed that the news of what was supposed to be a private and informal meeting has leaked out to the media but I am totally committed to Charlton Athletic Football Club."
He added: "It seemed after seeing headlines that the meeting was a bit shady and cloak and dagger but it was far from that. The FA asked to talk to me and the chairman, Richard Murray gave them permission. It was a very informal chat if you like - there was no interview. For me, it was an opportunity to see the face behind a name if you like. It was a very preliminary, informal chat. I was away all day yesterday (Saturday) watching a player abroad and didn't get home until 2am. If that's not committed to Charlton I don't know what is."
