A spotlight shining on The Valley is something the club has never had to contend with before. That all changed this season as Charlton only just missed out on reaching the last four in the FA Cup – then there was news of that meeting between Curbishley and the FA chief executive Brian Barwick which appeared on the front page of the Sunday Mirror.
Curbs reminded anyone who wasn't paying much attention to the club's sudden demise midway through the season: "It's a long season and we had a dreadful run before and around Christmas. We were regularly getting heavily beaten so something had to be done about that."
Indeed, the fall was arrested and Thomas Myrhe and Bryan Hughes were two players who had started the season on the fringe of Curbishley's starting line-up. Both players are starting week in week out since their performances in the second half of the season have impressed manager and supporters alike.
He added: "We brought in some new personnel and the clean sheets have helped us back on track."
