Murray said: "He's been the best manager in Charlton’s history but it's the England job, the best coaching job in the country. Any ambitious manager would be interested in it. We think the fans will understand why we gave our permission to the FA to speak to him."
Charlton chief executive Peter Varney revealed that he received the call from the FA before speaking with Murray, who then rang the FA back to give them permission to talk to the Addicks boss.
Varney confirmed there was nothing underhand in the discussions that went on last Friday. He said that proceedings had followed the process of any interview: "They wanted to talk about the England job, what it involved and the problems that go with it, then look the candidate in the eye and see if they still wanted the job."
