Chelsea Sign Parker - Read My Views and Your Views

Last updated : 30 January 2004 By David Robson
Well with a day left of the transfer window to go, Charlton have decided they cant win the battle against Parker and Chelsea. The deal isnt done yet but should be tomorrow but what will that mean for us and Parker?

When I heard the news today I was very disappointed, I do not blame Curbishley, I do not blame the chairman and the board, unfortunatly there is only two people to blame, one being Chelsea for buying anything which will mean there club is better than the rest of the Premiership, and the other is Scott Parker. Here is a good question...How will Parker bennefit from being a sub on the Chelsea bench? because he may start the odd game but i cant see him replacing the current Chelsea midfield. He will need to compete against Joe Cole, Frank Lampard and Claude Makelele to name a few. Will he get to Euro 2004? with Charlton he had a great chance, I cant see it happening now. Unless he gets first team football each week.

Im a big Parker fan, in fact i got his name and number on my shirt for christmas (doh!) and every game this season Parker puts in a man of the match display for us. But Parker signed a 5 yeah contract in the summer, only to leave 6 months later. Maybe something should be done about players contracts. Some situations i can understand, a good example was Duff to Chelsea, he had a clause saying if someone bidded so much he can go, and he did, but if someone signs a long term deal you would expect them to stay for at least 50% of that contract.

But what does this mean for Charlton, well not much. We should get around £10m for him but we probably cant spend it with the deadline on saturday. As for our european bid, I think we can still perform but losing Parker is a big blow. I do think it helps one player for us - Paul Konchesky. I think Paul will now take Parkers place in the team, with Jensen moving into central midfield.

I dont know about the rest of the Charlton fans but I wont be cheering Parker when he returns to the Valley. He is a great talent but i wish he gave alittle more respect to his 5 year contract.

Your article regarding Scott Parker smacks of sour grapes!!!!!

If a player wants to leave then he should be afforded that opportunity.
I am sure even you will agree that it's best to have players that want to
play for you not players who are dreaming of playing elsewhere.

You are right about one thing with the deal being done so late - Charlton
won't get the opportunity to enter the transfer window - but who's fault is
that. The deal should have happened 7-10 days ago but the powers to be at
Charlton wouldn't budge - only to budge with 72 hours to go before the
transfer deadline.

Charlton have performed well this year based on their heart and keeping
Scott Parker would have severely undermined this.

Finally with regards to Chelsea buying anything that would make their club
better - well mate that¹s the whole idea - to keep improving the club until
it is the best.

It will be interesting to see what Charlton do with the 10 million quid for
Parker - any chance of investing it into a player that will make Charlton a
better club - I think so what do you think?

Maybe the next time a player at Charlton signs a contract you shouldn't
promise him that if a bigger club makes an offer he can go.

Anyway best of luck for the rest of the year and I mean it - in my opinion
the transfer of Scott Parker will make both clubs stronger.

We should have a minute's silence on Saturday for Scott Parker's brain - it obviously died two weeks ago.

West Ham fan here. I rate Scott Parker and cannot for the life of me understand why he''s gone to Chelsea. Fcuk me, no loyalty in football anymore except us fans. Heard a rumour Carrick may be coming to you. Quite frankly the way he''s been playing this season i''ll give him a lift over to your place for free. He certainly won''t fill the void left by Parker, different player. Luxury when doing well but hides when backs against the wall. All the best by the way and hope you can secure forth place. Be nice if you caught Chelsea.

Scott is a massive loss to Charlton, and I can't help but think we will begin to drop back now.

The money is small compensation for a player who could have been the backbone of this team - his best is still 3 seasons away - what an investment Charlton have made, only for Chelsea to reap the benefit. And what little thanks from the player. I sincerly hope that Scott Parker is not benefitting financially from this £10m fee.

In pure financial terms the last 4 years on his contract  were worth so much more to Charlton than £10m. Say, for example, we were to finish 4th with him instead of 10th without, his worth, this season alone would be £3m in Premiership prize money, plus maybe £10m in Europe next year. Ok that's top end but you get the picture over a 4 year contract. If Charlton fall short of Europe this year from the position we are in, we will know why- and who in fact to blame, for breaking his contract. The knock on effect of this is the widening gap between the haves and have nots.

Happily we know that the Charlton board are level headed and able to plan for the long term, but this must have shaken even their belief . Everything they do is founded on the football management and team, and to lose the best youth product they have ever produced is frankly depressing. What impact this might have on Alan Curbishley - who will not be short of offers in the summer ? Only time will tell.

Fans will have to try not to be bitter, and instead to say thanks for the memories, which have been  cut cruelly short by his ambition for something else. Scott has been man of the match in many games this year. The times he has cleared our lines, and in the next move showed up in the opposition area. A fantastic workrate. He has regularly outplayed Joe Cole and Frank Lampard when I have seen them on the same pitch. I an confident he will make it in the Chelsea team, and I think he will make it as an England regular too. It will leave that bitter taste though, when the papers talk about Scott Parker, Chelsea and England.
