The £2.5 million buy from Sheffield Wednesday will be at the heart of the defence alongside Souleymane Diawara.
This is because of Talal El Karkouri's suspension and Hermann Hreidarrson's knee injury.
"Hermann has had a sore knee and we've nursed it though two or three games, but we couldn't take a chance again," explained Alan.
"It's a problem area for us because losing both centre-halves is not ideal,
but we have two more than capable players coming in: Madjid Bougherra to
make his debut and Souleymane Diawara, who is an outstanding centre-half."
Pardew also hinted towards a debut for on loan Arsenal midfielder Alexandre Song.
"I think we need to retain the ball better and I think Song is going to
improve that part of our game," he said.
"That's why I've brought him in. He has the potential to be as good as
anybody in that holding midfield role. He has the physical power to deal
with the defensive side of the game as well as that poise and balance on the
ball."
One player not playing at the Theatre of Dreams is star striker Darren Bent. The England international is back in full training and will be 100% fit for the crucial home game against West Ham United.
